What Is a Certified Water Technologist?

When I joined the company where I am currently employed, they asked me if I would consider becoming a “CWT.” Truth be told, I had never heard of that designation.

A CWT is a Certified Water Technologist, which is a certification awarded by the Association of Water Technologies (AWT) to qualifying water treaters. To be eligible, a person must have been a water treatment professional for a minimum of five years and have passed a peer review. All candidates must then take and pass a rigorous exam consisting of 200 questions on core information an experienced water treater is expected to know. After passing the exam, the next step in the process is to submit an application to become a CWT. Only water treaters with experience and a solid reputation are then considered for this credential.

Finally, a CWT must possess and maintain a high degree of ethics. Each CWT signs and commits to a 13-part Declaration of Ethics. Failure to maintain this high degree of ethics can result in revocation of the certification status. It’s these aspects that make the CWT designation a highly sought-after honor. All companies should feel a higher degree of confidence when working with a CWT.

I earned my CWT back in 2007 and have been recertified twice. I value this title even more when I meet other CWTs and see how they represent the industry well as respectable, fair, and honest professionals. I highly recommend anyone in the water treatment industry to look into the merits and advantages of becoming a Certified Water Technologist. I also recommend to customers of water treatment services that they consider the extra value a CWT brings to their businesses.
